Ya know... I think Ill chime in too & give this trip a shot... HOWEVER I do have a few problems... 33" tires & 3.56 gearing :'(
So there fore Im only able to do about 65mph & that mountain 8| Ill be lucky to do 30mph up it. Im also missing a rear shock too (tore the mount off on Tax Collector) So Ill try to re-weld the mount on if not Ill take it anyway.
I do have a CB & HAM radio's so I know ill fall far behind but will do my best to keep up.

Sounds like fun, NP being slow, I get better gas mileage going up the hill at 30mph then I do at 55 :)g)

We will caravan out and then just have you set the pace going up the mountains. All of our jeeps have CB radios, good way to keep in touch on the ride up.

This is my 1st trip with my cool new CB. OOO I did do the night run but there where only 3 of us with CBs
#45
OK sounds GREAT :)g)

As for night runs... only did 1 (Raw Deal & Judgement day) IMO Judgement Day should be rated 4.5 That 7' waterfall did ALOT of dammage!

Just looking around, Schnebly Hill Road looks good to drop into Sedona from, then hitting Soilder Pass and Broken Arrow.

Some pics: of the trails

You can google Earth it for some great pics too.

very cool I cant wait......

I've heard that's a good way in, too. Does everyone (anyone) have the good 'ol trusty "Guide to Arizona Backroads and 4 Wheel Drive Trails", by Charles Wells? http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Arizona-Backroads-4-Wheel-Trails/dp/0966497635 It's been our backroad "bible" (little "b") and recommended by almost every group I've run across. Really good write ups, picture, hints, tips, and information on all the trails we are looking to run on this one. We've almost worn ours out, plus it's fun to document when you ran each trail and with who in the book...

Biggest thing I'm not sure of yet- camping arrangements- where to do it.
Dispersed camping is what we're looking for, unless you like noisy neighbors and paying $18 per vehicle on top of the Red Rock pass.
Here's the map for camping with the trails marked, pink means you pay:

I have it open on my left, my GPS with the maps downloaded and waypoints marked on my right, and Google Earth open, along with the Coconino Forest Page. :))

LOL New School vs Old School. LOL

Lets camp by the Creek.

Ive done a back way from Munds Park (FS9492D) onto Schnebly Hill rd & on into Sedona, the road in question is about 5 miles & took me 2hrs in a 2wd, But it is a nice drive.

After you guys "shoot 'em up" during the guy's night this week, let's talk about camping spots a bit more. I like by the creek, but I REALLY don't know the area at all... is this going to be one of those "hey! this place looks good!!!" moments, or have one of you camped here before and have a preference? Just curious. You know my wife's first reaction to camping in the open camping was "do they have bathrooms?"... Of course, honey. Go to the creek, take a left, and stop at the first big bush you find... LOL

I talked with Nena from Sedona jeep school about camping and permits and this is what she said

You don't need a permit to run the trails, but you may need a Red Rock Pass if you are going to park at a trailhead. These can be purchased at most convenience stores, information centers, hotels, and at our store.

There are developed campgrounds in Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona, or dispersed camping on the west side of Sedona. Check out: http://www.redrockcountry.org/maps/index.shtml

Yeah, if you are going to be out of your car for longer than 15 minutes, you need the Pass.

Steve says he has camped "dispersley" just North of Sedona, above the switchbacks on the 89 (top of the map). If you look on Google Earth, there is a forest roads that leads East of theroad down into Fry Canyon where he has camped before. All pines on top of rim.
It would be tough getting all of us in a "real" campgound site anyway.

Also we should research Harding Point, NE of the switchbacks. Looks like a great overlook.

I would really like to be by the stream. That way I could fish with the boys.
#58
skatch - are you talking NF-237, or that other thing that looks like it "might" be a road on Google Earth?

nate - somehow, our kids are fishing. I'm feelin' the heat too, brother.
#59
The area speculated about is marked as roads above the switchbacks. I don't know what they are named.

I haven't heard about people catching much if anything in the creek.
We're still in the planning stages so definitely voice you opinions about what you'd like to see transpire.

You know how much I find running/lake water to be an essential part of camping. But I for one am not a campground person, nor want to pay $18 just for a toilet seat. I also don't think there are grounds large enough for more than say 5 people.

There seems to be a lot of forest roads East and above the canyon, accessed from N of the switchies.

I remember catching a lot of fish out of the Creek. What about by Grasshopper point? I think I'm going to have to make a day trip to look around. LOL Maybe I can talk my boss into some property visits.
