Been playing with the idea of getting a XJ for this trip. I see them all the time for $1200-1500. Parts are cheap and I still have some left over parts from my TJ that should work to get someone off the trail.
Wheel it for the week, puts some dents in it, break some glass take it home and sell it. Its cheaper than building my truck. It also saves the body on my truck.
Or should I look for a full size Bronco to wheel... Hmmmm.....

XJs are horrible. :))

I have a dana 30 with 4.56s and a locker you can use.

Is rather work on a Cherokee then a Ford any day of the week, regardless of where I am.. just sayin.

Greetings. I am a new member to this forum but an old somewhat experienced Jeeper / Wheeler. I have been to the Con. It is unbelievable wheeling and the scenery second to none. For those who have been to Moab it is a completely different wheeling experience. You have to camp to get full benefit so there is much stuff you need to carry in your rig other than your usual trail gear. I had to take the front seat out of my TJ just to get everything to fit. Regardless, it is well worth the drive. Like Moab, an experience you will never forget.

With all that said, keep in mind you will be at about 8000 ft or more so it is cool. It is possible snow will still be on the ground through mid July! That may make some of the trail impassable secondary to swift water. In addition, late July and early August the place is crawling with Jeep Safari and other big events clogging up the trail. We went in early September. The weather was awesome and trail generally clear of traffice and high water.

I certainly would be interested in taking another trip but cannot commit until dates are set.

Planning on picking up an XJ after KOH for this trip... Not sure I'm ready to bash my truck up that bad yet.

I still like the XJ idea...

I was talking to a few people at the party and the first week of September is being tossed around. What do you guys think?

Once a date is somewhat nailed down I will relay that info to my buddy near Tahoe. His place is the perfect show up and crash point. Sept sounds good to me. What kind of schedule are we looking at? Travel on Thursday/Friday, wheel a long weekend, return Monday/Wednesday ish? We need enough time to see the entire trail....

First week of September works for us, Should give me enough time to get something to wheel and get my trailer road worthy.

As far as how long, I'd say leave super early Saturday morning, drive all weekend, wheel Monday-Wednesday/Thursday? then head home..

James we were talking about leaving on sat Aug 31st and start the drive home on Thurs Sept 5th. This will save some peopel a day of work since the 2nd is Labor day. Do we need 2 day travel time there and two day back?
From all the trip reports I see it looks like 3 days is good on the trail. Let me know if I am wrong on that.

Same here. If we nail down that date, I can both block it off at work and start the home planning. Thank you for avoiding anniversaries, Mother's Day, and my son's birthday. :-)

I wonder if theres any side trails for an overnight backpacking trip too?

Im good for a week off like we did CO

How rough are these trails? Do I dare take my daily driver and risk bashing it it all up?

I don't know if this answers Jimmy's question as I've never done it and only heard it as legend, but they have their own website: http://www.rubicontrail.com

The "vehicle mods" link on the left was helpful.

From what I was told a Jeep is fine on the trail. Its the Full size that have a hard time. There are sections that are as hard as you make it.
#37
those dates should be fine for Lenny and I. I'm planning on driving the xj to the trail (and home) this time.
#38
That'll be a fun drive Matt... Lol I think I could get my truck through the trail alright, but I just don't know if I want to dedicate that much body damage to it yet. James, I think your jeep would be fine on the trail.

Scratches are very manly. Crushmarks don't buff out. :D
