Headed up to 17B on Thursday about noon. Set up camp, made nice with the other hunters and headed out to glass some game.
Drove out to the same hill I tried last year and that I had scouted a few times and that Paul and Virgil had some luck at. Pulled up about 4:15 and glassed up 18 Javelina as soon as I got out of the truck.
About that time an older (my dads age) hunter came out of the thick stuff and waived. I asked if he had seen all the Javelina. He had glassed the hill about 30 min before and didn't see a thing. He was almost as giddy as me when he counted up all those little moving rock (they do look like a rock when you are a ways off).
He let me know that he was here to help with the hunt and had a 15 year old, with his dad,that was new to hunting and was going to shadow him this weekend. He asked if it would be ok to tag along in the morn. I had no issue with that.
Next morn we were out early and watched as the Javelina woke up and moved over the ridge. We followed and found them eating away.
I had my 30-30 open sights and the kid had a scoped .308. I took the path to the middle of the herd while the rest of the group took the high ground one rig over. I was going to take first shot and then the kid would take one as it ran up the hill.
I took my time and got into shooting position. Thats when it happened... Everything I knew about shooting went out the window. I pulled the trigger and sent the round over my target. I stood up while I chambered another round. The herd took off... but not up the hill. The ran AT ME!!! The rest was a blur. I lit off all 5 rounds and said some loud words as I was pissed at my self for not being able to keep my head.
About that time I hear a huff snort. Low and behold I had shot one!!! I put him down with the .40 and rest is history...
