Just helped stop a hit and run
It was a slow side by side chase .5 mile chase.
Soon as this guy pulled out I smelled trouble.
Grand Ave, 3 lanes 11PM. Middle lane me, vehicle immediate right side, vehicle ahead left lane followed by another behind me.
White mid-size van parked on side pulls out very slow. Vehicle right brakes fast, oblivious van veers slowly across my lane and keeps awkward angle into left lane where 1st vehicle contact is made in T-bone fashion. Left lane behind me locks up on wet pavement, I go right to allow room.
Past wreck now and oh hey, the white van is still going. Speed up, pull alongside and shout through open windows to driver. I allow the charade of him being stunned and not actually trying to get away by yelling, "Sir you were just in an accident, I need you to pull over, your vehicle is damaged." He responds with "Oh, yeah, I'm good." This goes on as we continue in parallel at less than 10miles an hour. More of the same interaction occurs, with same type response. Eventually he slows to stop but then starts back up. This happens twice and the third time with stronger words adding that people are hurt and the police are on the way, he comes to a stop. A car come up from behind and I move a bit to let him by and then van driver pedals down again and ends up driving up-curb and onto the median (as if he were trying to drive into oncoming lanes) where his vehicle eventually stops in the gravel.
I pull over as another car pulls over and two guys get out, one with a gun in his hand. (Mine is quietly concealed in my waste band) They approach and ask if I was involved in the wreck. I let them know it is the van man and he keeps trying to get away. As they approach behind me the one dude still has his gun out and I have to tell him to put it away or not approach.
I approach first and see v-man trying to exit his vehicle but his door is totally smashed shut never mind that his seat belt is locked.
As I'm talking to him he keeps wigging out and trying to decide whether or not to drive off again. Flashing lights have shown up to the crash a half mile back but no one is down where we are.
We finally get V to turn off the engine. Other two stoppers go back to the other side of the road to recall police. V turns engine back on. I still try to conversate with him asking if he hit his head, etc, but this guy is just gone behind the eyes except when they dart around to contemplate leaving again. 2 stoppers come back over and get V to turn engine back off and remove keys. As a police unit approaches, V is trying to get out of vehicle and even shift the shut off van.
Police come onto scene finally.
A woman pulls up and tries to converse with hands-on-gun-butt officers pulling V out of vehicle and they have to scare her off with arrest threat. She turns out to be the suspect's lady and he had called her minutes before with talk of feeling ill and vomiting so she came to find him. She insists that he does not do drugs or drink. Cops do not read alcohol on him and call in drug specialist. They are stumped to his actions in the wreck and at current state but suspect medical condition or meth.
Statements and info taken and then I leave.
