fuel pump died?
#1
Youd think on a trail rated 2.5 we wouldnt have any problems. But you know, things always come up :)

Bob lost a sidewall in the sand. Not sure how that happened ;)

And coming out I think my fuel pump died. I was going over a small hill and the jeep suddenly lost power. I stopped and it would not turn over again.

We checked the battery, evap hoses and cables under the hood, nothing was loose or out of place. Bob had the idea of listening to see if we could hear the fuel pump priming when we started the jeep.

Sure enough it was silent.

So after waiting over 3 hours for AAA to tow us back, we got tired of waiting and decided to hook up the strap for the hour drive back to town from Wickenburg. Thanks Dana and Johnathan for the tow home

Ill start working on it tomorrow, it will take some work to drop the gas tank, especially since it is almost completely full. I may siphon out the gas so it is not as heavy and the pump is easier to access

looks like Ill be down a couple of days. Autozone does not have the part in stock, they have to special order it

I double checked the relays and fuses today, moved the horn relay, into the fuel pump relay and still nothing. Did the same with a 20amp fuse for the fuel pump fuses

Hopefully you get it fixed soon, btw are you going camping this weekend?
#4
Camping doesn't even require a jeep really.
#5
Yeah Chris you can take Megans car out there
#6
I'm sure if you need a lift somewhere Wrangler and Ashley won't mind scooting over.
#7
nah we had prior plans with megans family
#8
Your no fun. JK hope you have a good time.

$384??

wow, just talked to moore jeep and they want $384 for a fuel pump? I told him I can buy them new online for $200! He said go ahead and do that then

Amazing how much they wanted for it

It is no surprise that dealerships are a ripoff.

So the fuel pump was replaced and... it still doesnt start

Michael was over today and it started to throw an error cod p0340. Checked that out and it says a few things could be the problem

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
the camshaft position sensor may have failed
the PCM may have failed
there exists an open circuit
the crankshaft position sensor may have failed
Possible SolutionsWith a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

So we replaced the Crank Positioning sensor and the Cam positioning sensor along with a new battery and still nothing.

Im thinking Im going to end up taking it into the shop on monday and have them chase down the issue. Ive spent alot of cash trying to get this figured out and dont really want to spend more on parts that aren't needed. :(

Summary:
01 TJ 4.0
Replaced fuel pump
Replaced fuses and relay
New battery
Error P0340
New crank position sensor
New cam position sensor
Gas guage works
Jeep turns over
Jeep wont start

picked up a little spark tester from autozone on my way home from work tonight. Just checked to see if the coil rail was getting power and it is sparking...

So, Im guessing since the error p0340 was there (its gone since I reset the PCM) This indicates an open circuit in my wiring someplace or a bad PCM

Any other ideas before I take it in on Thursday?

Have you tried winning the lottery? you are going to need the money if you are taking it to a dealership.
#14
Yeah, but I'm not the lottery, plus he's spent too much fixing things that weren't wrong and it still hasn't fixed the problem.

I swear sometimes I hate when some people's idea of "free" is somehow 8+ hours worth of my time. On things like this, you guys are better off at the dealer or a shop. Diagnosis is always a pain on the pocketbook and time.

trying one last thing tonight, going to manually pump fuel into the injectors and see if it starts up. Renting a tool from autozone today to try that
#16
What time is Michael coming over too help you? LOL

nah this is easy to do. just screw it on and have someone start the jeep while you check the guage

i pulled off my coil rail last night to check for spark too, easy stuff

even pulled my gas tank and replaced the fuel pump alone, just needed help getting it back in
#18
It's true. He only needed me cuz it was full of gas and heavy
#19
progress! :)=)

messed around with it more tonight. I was able to get the engine started and running by spraying in some fuel into the throttlebody intake

I also picked up a circuit tester from autozone to try and chase down a possible electric issue

I knew my relays were good for the fuel pump, brand new and was able to sawp the fuel pump and horn relay around just to verify the relay worked.

However when I put the circuit tester into the fuel pump relay slot it did not work. Neither did the rear O2 relay slot. Horn relay and others worked fine

It looks like there is a short in the wiring in the underhood fuse box or the box itself has a short. Which is good news for me. I think I have the problem narrowed down and hopefully should be able to get it fixed myself

Very nice. Just keep stabbing that tester in the wires on down the line till you figure out where the power stopage is.
