GREER, Ariz. -- The raging Wallow Fire has burned through the mountain resort town of Greer.

Forest officials said Thursday morning that the fire went through the town overnight. But, they said it would be hours before they could get into the town and determine the extent of damage.

"Peter Frenzen with the command team handling this fire told me a few minutes ago the fire reached a canyon above Greer late , high winds pushed this fire right through the town -- at one point so hot the crews had to leave and then come back in later," News/Talk 92.3 KTAR's Jim Cross said Thursday morning. "This fire burned hot all night long."

Greer was evacuated Tuesday.

"We know structures were lost," Frenzen said. "We have identified the owners, or attempted to contact them and as we contact the owners we will release more information."

Greer is a popular resort town in the White Mountains, known for rustic cabins, hiking and fishing in summer, skiing and snow sports in winter.

Its historic main lodge burned May 10. Federal investigators said just this week that the lodge fire was arson and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to those responsible. Damage in that fire was estimated at more than $2 million.

greer had several historic lodges that were a hundred+ years old :(

Okay just a question... If we know fire danger is extreme during the summer, and we know fire burns dead stuff

Why doesnt AZ have crews clearing dead brush and timber around towns every spring?

Because of all the lawsuits and injunctions (sp?)... They said that alpine would have been worse but the town clears out stuff all the time and have for the last 10 years...

i tried to find the article i read about how we want to save the animals more than making sure that something like this would not happened. they talked about how the forest was always logged and cleared but then they said the mexican spotted owl was endangered and had to stop. this led to loss of jobs and the forest overgrowth including layers of kindeling that was all that was needed to create the disaster we have now. at the end of the article the final quote was "where are the owls going to live at now"

Fire start speculative report:
Two people are being held in connection with starting the fire. The story is that the men had left a fire burning in their camp. The men chained up their two dogs while they walked off to go fishing. The dogs were chained too close to the fire. While roaming around, the dogs chains dragged burning embers out of the fire ring. The dogs died
