I notice that the Moderators (and I use that term lightly) of a local Jeep Club seem to stir up a lot of furry and angst amongst the members. Currently there is a kind-of 'Bring-It' thread that has become down-right nasty with name calling and calling people out. It was started by a 'Moderator'.

Since moderating generally involves making sure a forum is a safe and fun place for folks to be, I wonder if the 'Owner' of said forum is actually putting the 'Moderators' up to this kind of posting in order to increase traffic. Kind of 'Bad Attention is better than No Attention' philosophy.

What say you?

yah it wouldnt surprise me. I know Joe always says hes not running a "business" but I dont really think thats true. He says he needs 10k more to run the server plus increasing rates for business sponsorship. I run our site plus 10 others on a box with only 512mb ram and we pay less then $500 a year for hosting, nowhere near the 10k he claims to need

maybe joe just likes running stuff on a macintosh but theres a good reason big IT companies use unix and sun machines over an apple.

I dont really have a problem with him wanting to run the vjc as a for profit/hobby business but he should just come out and say it rather then constantly side stepping the issue.

also mods need to be consistent with what they are doing, too many times one mod lets something go, then another sees it and edits or deletes it. Mods should be consistent 100 percent of the time, alot of the drama problems are from inconsistent rules

I know his site has been shedding members pretty quickly for the last year or so too, pretty much when the issue with Joe Darros shop started up members started to split

oh boy, the other vjc site. well lets see. its full of way too much drama. joe is definitely running it for profit after advertising issues i had with him. plus he was pretty rude and didnt see a co ran out of a garage as a "Real" company. lets just say i pretty much lost my right to do anything other than say hi on that site after that. unless i wanted to pay $xxxx.xx to do so.
i try to never go over there anymore. to many other good sites out there that i can be on with great people like this one. keep it up guys this one is great.

He wanted $xxxx.xx from us to advertize our CB Mounts over there. I explained it was just a small operation run out of our garage; certainly won't even make that much money in a year.

I gave him a choice of let me post one add in the TJ section (take the ones down I had in CJ, YJ, LJ) and I'd maintain my silver membership. He never even had the courtesy to reply, so I took them all down and renewed at the bronze level.

Now I've got ads for the CB Mounts & Tee-Shirts in the 'Recession Forum' under Member's Businesses.

What a dork. Could've pocketed the extra $50 no questions.

Oh, and one thing I've learned: when someone say's "It's not about the money", it's about the money.

sounds exactly lke my issue except i cant even adverstise at all. period. i even bought a gold forum sponsorship. which is what another guy on there had and he was alowed to advertise but no i cant. oh the the leasons you learn in life about people.

I don't think JW is putting them up to it. I think a few of them are just BAD choices for mods.

That doesn't mean I haven't been jumping in and out to stir the pot. I even managed to get rep points from one mod that I took a shot at. She didn't even get it.

No, it was in one of the other drama threads. I posted and replied to my own post here and she gave me rep points.

That site is definitely for profit now. Not what the VJC was designed to be. Hence me opening the site we have now. The LLC after I opened showed that to me. He said it was for liability reasons, but for the 15k or so a year he makes off that board I know it was tax reasons. For me it will NEVER be for profit. To be honest I actually lose about 20 cents each time I send out a sticker. The hosting bill has been and will always be paid by me for the life of this forum. Yeah I have the Banner ads and at some point in time I'll probably offer Banner Ads for vendors, but the charge will be nominal and will either go directly back into the board, the AZOHVC, or to sign the board up to other land use organizations.

I don't go over there, but if someone posted a link to a thread I might read it. :D It's funny that every single person that posts excessively on my board is now a Moderator on that board. :lol:

well jack, if you ever do little banner ads for the venders let me know. ill send you some coin to help the site and advertise a little.
