what is a c clip and why do people eliminate them

yeah, i havent researched, but all the 8.8s im seeing have it removed - what is it and why do people take it off

If you break a c-clip axle on the trail, the whole axle, hub, wheel, everything is coming out of the tube....

if you break a non c-clip axle, your wheel and hub and everything stay attached and will still roll.
