I always hung mine from the ceiling the garage on the YJ, Just drove in, used small straps to ratchet it up, then drove out from under it.

yah thats an option for the side patio, im wondering if having the top hang from the roof like that would be in the way for moving around and stuff - did you hit your head on it? ideally id like to roll it out of the way and let it sit for a couple of months

I didn't have floor space, so I had to go up.

Dude... did you really ask me if I hit my head on it? LOL. thanks!

No, I didn't hit my head on it, but then again, it hung down low enough that I couldn't miss it. I only raised it about 3 inches above where it rode on the body of the TJ. Easy up, easy to back under for down...

Also, I had to put it on and off myself, so having it where I could drive under worked for me. It was bulky enough that I couldn't pick it up and put it on the TJ by myself without beating the hell out of the side of the Jeep.

do you still have the hoist system?

im thinking maybe a hoist for taking it off then lowering onto a dolly for storage

It was four eyelets screed into the beams in the roof and 4 cheap UTV ratchet straps. I hooked one under each corner, cranked it up 4 inches, then did another corner. Cheap and effective, but un-sophisticated and super simple.
