I need to redo my yard, its ugly and boring. Anyone experienced with designing landscapes and stuff? We want it to be greener with more trees for birds and things. Any particular fast growing shrubs or trees I should look at? Want to plant them along the fence line so it blocks out the neighbors houses but keep my grass sunny so it still grows.

Sisso trees grow really fast, but they will give a lot of shade and hinder your grass, I'm constantly battling this in my yard. The large tree in my backyard was a sisso. I will be trying a fescue grass next summer since it is supposed to be better in shade.

Column ficus are popular to create barriers like you want. Other options would be yellow bell bushes or narrow columnar evergreens.

Does this mean you're staying for the long haul?
