Grease puddling on the inside of my rim...
#1
When I went to rotate my tires today, I noticed that there was a good filmy build-up of grease on the inside of my rim. This is on my rear passenger tire. At first, I thought it was brake fluid, but the caliper and connections look good (cursory view, didn't take it apart). I saw no signs of brake fluid. Yet, there was definitely oil or grease around the lower half of the backing plate.

On a side note, I also noticed some wetness on my rear diff cover. This sucks, as I just had the gasket replaced when I had my fluids replaced at the dealership.

Since I had my budget boost + shocks installed, I've always had the sensation of the rear end bouncing around during turns. Maybe that's where the problem lies and this leak was caused by this.

I think this is beyond my capabilities. C'mon techs. Give me some feedback/advice.

I still need to get with Chris @ Lost Offroad about my gear change and lockers. This may be another job for him.

Only other then back there besides brakes is your axle seal.. I've seen shocks leak before and make a mess, but you probably would have noticed that

oil from the shock?

99 out of a 100 times Its going to be one of two things, brakes or axle seal. It sounds more like an axle seal. I think the d44 from chris is a bolt in match. Im not sure he would miss it... for a while anyway.

Assuming it's an axle seal, is this an easy job to tackle? I purchased an extended warranty. Should I drop it off at the dealership?

yeah they are easy to do

I forget who makes them but theres a permanent rubber gasket you can put on there in place of the paper/rtv seal

If you have an extended warranty that covers this at no charge to you I would take full advantage of it...

the only thing I have to add is that I like this thread because I keep thinking the title says "Pudding".
