Not going in gear
#1
Sister just called me and said her Jeep wouldnt go in gear. It will do from P to N but thats it. I was thinking she bumped the t-case. Had her shift it and nothing changed.
Then she said her AC is not blowing hot.... Had her look to see if a belt was missing. All there and look good.
Does Jeep have a oil safety? If the oil runs out will the safety kick in so you cant drive it? Her 350z had that...
Its a 2004 TJ 4.0 auto

Ideas?

The physical gear shifter wont go past N?

That seems like it would be the linkage from the shifter to the tcase

Its not something simple like a coin stuck in the shifter groove stopping it from going back right?

From what I was told over the phone It will go from P to N but will not go into R or 1-2-D. She can move the shifter down but it will not click in.
I was thinking it was a linkage till she said the AC was blowing hot. I asked her to look to see if a belt had come off but she said it looked fine. Im going to grab my tools and fluids and head over after work. If I cant fix it she has towing and I will get it towed home.

So it skips over reverse and clicks into neutral? I've never heard that happen. I agree with Chris. Check the linkage and the tranny fluid level.

Just talked to Bob, linkage fell apart... pieces missing. he got it on the road, should be an easy enough fix once he gets the parts.

Ok... so the correct word that I wanted while I was covered in dirt and had people try to run over my legs.... is shift cable. It done fell apart. Going to order one up.
