blah emissions
#1
So my registration is due, technically its past due

This is the first year for the jeep to go through emissions. Well it wont pass. That stupid check engine light that has been on for the last 3 years. They automatically fail it.

The error is that P0442. Small leak detected. Ive had it in 3 times and they never were able to fix it.

"A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal "

Ive replaced the gas cap and had the evap system smoke tested. They did not find any leaks. Its getting expensive taking it each time. The dealer charges a flat $110 diagnostic fee every visit

The only thing I didnt check was the vent o-ring seal. Not sure where that is or what it does

So what now? Any ideas on how to get it passed?

I feel for you... I can't get mine to stay off...

Stop doing nothing, sometimes that helps.

Drop your tank, check the top. We've smelled gas everytime a sharp turn or bump was taken ever since we put in your kilby tank skid- that's not normal.

Are they actually running your codes or can you just take the stupid light out and pass?

You can't take the light out. The do a bulb check... The check eng light must come on and go out...

I found that out the hard way.

What year is the heep?

***Found the info I needed****

I was going ot say that if the jeep wasn't passing and it under the 5 year 100k rule then let jeep fix it for free.

It is not your gas cap, that is a quick fix if it was. There is a code you put in to reset your check engine senser and that is the first thing the dealer would have done.

If you know someone down at the dealer, give them a call and get the code just to double check.

Why dont you try putting those new gears in and see if that helps

This weekend ill drop the gas tank and start out replacing the fuel filler hose, the o-ring and any other noticeable seals around the gas tank.

Hopefully that will fix it, if not, well Ill start replacing other random things until something works

You were saying that part of the code was "Other small leak in EVAP system" I know this is off the wall but you may want to check the charcoal canister. That was part of my problem this last time around when I had the same code.
#9
The canister botched my emissions on my truck once.
There's no real way to tell if it's bad either.
#10
hmm ill check out the canister too, i didnt know that the newer vehicles had one. I know on my 76 bronco I had to replace that to get it through emissions a few years ago

A couple of other things Ive noticed

When the gas tank is full and I go over speedbumps I can smell gas, when its half full or near empty no smell

So that makes me think its a seal around the top of the tank where the fuel filler hose connects

Also I know Ive had this code before P0455 which is a medium leak detected. Im wondering that when the gas tank is full, does that other code show up? This might be another indication about the fuel filler hose

Have you dropped the tank yet to check the seal?
#13
I messed with it last weekend but never found anything obviously wrong, Im taking it in to Master Tech auto (67th Thunderbird) on Friday to have them smoke test it again and find the leak.

well $284 later I have the jeep back

They replaced a couple of o-ring seals and they think that fixed it. Im a little skeptical, guess Ill wait and see if it comes back on
