rugged off-road trailer with matching Jeep tires.
#1

Up for sale is my 1st off-road trailer. I purchased this home built trailer off Craigslist last year and it turned out to be a real piece of crap. Avis tore it down and replaced 90% of the metal. The only thing original is the angle irons that form the 4'x6' box, leaf springs, and leaf spring mounts. He did a fantastic job rebuilding this to be a super nice offroad trailer. The inside has 3 coats of Herculiner roll-on bed liner. The outside has two coats of spray-on bed liner. The trailer has good articulation. I've had the opportunity to take it on several runs and desert shooting trips, and it did fantastic! There are a BUNCH of photos at the bottom.

Here's the goods:

  • NEW 10ga metal floor
  • NEW 14ga walls
  • Removable fold down tailgate w/ NEW 14ga panel
  • NEW 3500# axle & hubs with 5x5 bolt pattern.
  • NEW Jeep-Style wide and flat fenders
  • NEW wiring harness AND tail lights
  • Jeep factory spare tire carrier from my 2009 Jeep Wrangler JK (mounted up front)
  • (3) Jeep 17" factory painted rims w/ Goodyear Wrangler 255/75-17. Treads are good
  • NEW 2000# swingback trailer jack w/ flat base
  • NEW tow security chain
  • NEW tongue that extends WAAAY back
  • NEW 2" ball coupler
  • NEW (5) aluminum tie-downs
  • NEW (2) Blitz Jerry Can mounts
  • NEW (2) military LOCKING jerry can straps
  • NEW Scepter 5gal WATER jerry can
  • Blitz non-CARB 5gal metal FUEL jerry can w/ metal spout (has a NEW rubber seal on spout and fuel lid)
  • Leaf springs are original. Looks to have come off of a Ford pickup. Not sure.

Note: If you would like a NEW Scepter metal 5gal FUEL jerry can that is CARB compliant, I can swap it out with the Blitz non-CARB.

The axle has been flipped to increase the ride height and clearance. The tail lights covers are made from thick steel. It will take the abuse of offroad travel. The jerry cans are mounted up front to place more weight on the tongue. This aids in a better ride and better balance when off-road. I built this for my Jeep. Initially, I was intending on adding a 5" lift and 35" tires (currently it has a 2.5" lift and 33" tires), but my money got redirected to another project. Now, I have no need for this trailer.

OH, the tailgate is set up to be lockable with padlocks. my intent was to design and fabricate a hinged hard top and make this trailer an expedition trailer (with tents, solar panels, and the whole works). I didn't get to this phase yet, as my interest was directed to my new project.

I have over $2,200 invested. I'm looking to get $2,000 obo. It has a AZ permanent plate, so the transfer fee is cheap (like $16.00). I have the AZ title in hand and ready to transfer.

So, if you have a lifted Jeep or other off-road vehicle, and are looking for a fantastic trailer to pull your gear, THIS bad boy is for YOU!!!!!

The trailer looks a bit dirty and has a some bird poop on it. We just had a monsoon storm blow in last week and I didn't get a chance to hose it down. So, sorry for the "unclean" pics. Wait... I'm NOT sorry. This is an offroad trailer for an offroad vehicle! It's meant to be dirty! AARRGG!

Cool! Do you have any other pictures of the trailer? Also, my jeep is lifted almost the same as yours. Any way to get the trailer to ride a bit more level? Instead of a drop hitch receiver from the jeep, is it possible to reverse it so it's raised? Is that safe...if you can? Could I put on 285-70-17 tires without any problem? What does 'The trailer has good articulation' mean? Sorry, I am new to this trailer stuff! :)

There are many solutions.

You can get an adjustable hitch. There is no problem there. Except that if you need to open your tailgate, you need to remove/lower the hitch. Something similar to this: EBAY LINK

The hitch can be flipped to either give your ball higher ride or lower ride. Right now, once you actually load weight in the trailer, it will level out. The rear is sitting higher because I flipped the axle. The leaf springs are sitting on top of the axle. You can flip it back. This will level it out, but once you load it, the rear will sit lower, making it uncomfortable to tow. You want the rear to be level or higher than the front.

If it was me, I would buy the adjustable hitch.

As for your tires. Sure, it will fit the 285-70-17 tires. You can even go wider. I would not attempt to go any taller. Yours are about 32.7" Anything greater than 33.5" and you may experience rubbing on the fender.

I don't have any other pics. If you want specific pics, I can take them and shoot them over to your email or cellphone. Just tell me what you need.

As for the articulation. Articulation is just a fancy word for "flex". How much flex the suspension will allow when driving on rough terrain. The harder the springs/suspension, the less flex you have. If you drive over a boulder on one of the trailer wheels, and you don't have enough flex, the trailer can flip onto its side. This is a real problem when towing off-road. Especially since the ball hitch doesn't offer much flexing.

I see you have a 928 area code. I'm near arrowhead ranch near 59th ave and Union Hills. If you are in the area, contact me and come see it. Or, come tow it. I have an adjustable hitch you can use.
