Syota version 6.0
#41
Sunday was less productive on the Syota because I had some other oblications to tend to but I did manage to start working on the sheetmetal and electrical for the cooling fan. I have a wish to try to generate some ram air flow for the radiator while at speed, I'm skeptical but that part comes later, first I had to build a "wall" to seperate the air inlet of the radiator from the air outlet in hopes that the hot oulet air will not cycle back around to the inlet and not allow cooler air in and let the radiator work efficiently. I also mounted my catch bottle;

The outside ends are not finished yet as I am not completely sure how the beds sides are gonna form yet, part of the ram air for the radiator to be determined later.

I managed to squeek out a little more time to start wiring the cooling fan..... I am running a 2 speed Taurus fan and want to run both speeds...... Low will kick on about 180°-200° or so via an adjustable thermostat and high speed will be run by the computer thermostat probably in the neighborhood of about 220° (I have to make a phone call to verify this, I have other questions about this too) I managed to get a few wires hooked up but I need to nail down a schematic before I go much farther then this;

Will be tricky as the aftermarket adjustable thermostat and relays along with all my previous wiring projects have been switched via the positive side of the circuit where the computer switch controls the ground side of the cricuit, top that with the fact that I want to kill the power to the low speed side while the high speed side is active........ Ugh.....

I can not believe he made it through that video with out losing it..... He is actually seriously excited about that POS.......... WOW.

Got the air intake plumbing all done only to find out I have the wrong MAF sensor, got the O2 sensor bungs in and the rest of the exhaust system done also got the wiring all done..... Should be getting my heater control valve this week so I can hook up heater hoses and fill it with coolant, then try to start it....... Still have plenty I want to do to get it done, but should be running and driving this weekend..... Not many pics but I have to upload them yet....

Here's my air cleaner plumbing;

Finished wiring the fan;

Aftermarket adjustable fan thermostat for high speed fan;

check engine light, some other things in the engine compartment and dash.

Also got the exhaust system put together;

I also managed to remove the rest of the plastic from the rear fenders for mod...... that wiill happen this weekend......

So that's where all those parts were going. Can't wait to see the finished rear tube work.

Should have another small package coming from the brown santa later this week too..... Then I can hook up heater hoses.... :D

Yet another weekend and yet another update......

Thursday I came home early for a funeral then had the rest of the afternoon to work on the junk....... I was able to solidify a few things, pull all the spark plugs and crank the motor by starter to try to generate oil pressure...... No luck after 5-6 30 secod sessions...... in the plugs went and I then fiured I would try it..... No water in it yet so I was hoping for quick oil pressure before it got too hot...... Put the key to it and bam, fired right up, ran for about 10 seconds and we had oil pressure...... That was it for Thursday night.

Friday night I stopped at the grocery for distilled water and oh yea, some beer..... came home and proceeded to fill the radiator...... fired it up and ran it for a while..... it bled out and as soon as it got to thermostat temp...... the waterpump started spewing out from behind the pulley....... I now had to drain 4± gallons of water back out of the system to install a new waterpump that I pucked up that night.......

Saturday AM I swapped out the waterpump in about an hour as without a radiator and fan clutch to deal with is was quite easy...... I then went to wrok on some tubes for new the rear fender design. As I was welding them all up I ran out of CO2 for the welder and was done welding for the weekend...... Meanwhile I learned that the bleeder I installed for the coolant system was a good idea cept it is suppose to be able to constantly flow..... Makes sense as thats how it is from the factory....... SO I went to he parts house and got the fittings for a T and proceeded to drill and tap the waterpump for the "return" of said line....... filled it with water and called it a day as I had a dinner date with my girl whom I havent had such with in month due to a family illness......

Here's the T fitting;

and the bad location of the port in the waterpump;

The new location is to the right of the casting rib in the middle of the pump .

Sunday AM rolls around and I notice a little puddle of coolant under the front of the engine.....Hoping it was the residule from the old waterpump exploding I went to work on cleaning up some wiring in the engine compartment as I wanted to take it for a drive and didnt want any wiring to get where it would be damaged.....As I was messin around in there I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and looked at the new waterpump and noticed it was wet so I looked closer and noticed the drill and tap job I did was in teh wrong location and cracked a brand new water pump........ Out comes the 4 gallons of coolant again and back to the parts house for another $130 waterpump...... This time I drilled and tapped the waterpump prior to install and got a better location...... installed the pump, filled with water AGAIN....... added some tranny fluid and started it up and pulled it out in the driveway for the first time in 6 weeks.....

As the truck was warming up I cracked the bleeder on the coolant system to bleed the air out, I also added more tranny and P/S fluid as needed. After some time I noticed that my heater control valve was leaking so I shut the motor down and bypassed it until I can get a good one....... now hot water will travel through the heater core all the time. Now for a restart and let it warm up to check out how the fans were gonna work...... Well it never got hot enough to kick on the high speed fan. Which is just fine with me...... The temp gauge hovered around 180° as the computer controlled low speed fan cycled.

Now for some pics;

I have alot of work to do on the bed sides and around the radiator area for protection and aor flow...... Stay tuned

After cleaning up I opted to check out that next and prolly most difficult part of this swap...... the hood.... I have a plan but have to start my prepping the old hood for modification;

Thats all for this week.

oh and BTW, it drives really nice......

Thanks Alan, I usually come straight to the forum and miss that page......

So its been a few weeks and I did get some stuff done on it but I had some other junk come up that kinda pre-occupied my priorities....... I spent most of the last few weeks getting the bed, bed sides and the back half together.

Had to start with "inner fenders" where the plastic used to be;

The came some frame work for ducting to get airflow to the radiator;

I also managed to get the hole cut in the hood and mounted it back on the truck to see how much of a PITA this was gonna be?

#59
Back to the back half, I painted all the new work and started on the tupperware sides and some screen in the air inlet holes;

Took me a few tries but I finally got it on there;

Next I removed the stinger that I never really liked so I figured now is a great time for a facelift. I tried to install a new 3rd gen grille that my son has but it wasnt even close to I went back to the old grille for now. I kinda like it back this way;

View from the back;

This is what I have in my driveway;
