installing gears
#1
My gears for the front and rear axle came in monday. The plan right now is to start the install on Sunday afternoon. Ive been reading through alot of tech papers that Mike printed out for me. Overall it doesnt sound too complicated, just lots of measuring and precision. I have to pick up a few more tools too.

We will keep everyone posted with the progress as this is one of the bigger installs weve done

I thought you said we were starting on Saturday :?

gotta pick up the bearing press and a few tools saturday afternoon

I called 4wheelers today just to see how much it would cost to have them installed. They want $600 to do it and cant schedule it in for 2 weeks.

4wheelers in phx? They are always swamped.
Try this place. http://www.desertfab.com/
They are on the other side of the world from you but they do good work and don't cost as much most times.

Day 1 Report:
Let the record show, I personally would have paid the $600.

And... Update!!!! Lets hear the good the bad and the ugly of it all...

hah, it seems like we spent the entire day on 1 bolt

We broke 1 pitman arm puller and 1 craftsman wrench trying to get that pitman arm off

But finally we got it out and the rest of the control arms and bolts came off easily.

The axle is now sitting on some stands in the garage, ready to be cleaned out and have the new gears put in. Hopefully tonight we can have the front axle done

Then on Tuesday we can finish up the rear

You'd better be getting something done while I'm at work :?
#9
hah, I finished draining it and am trying to figure out how to pull the gears out, the rightup from pirate talks about marking and measuring stuff now so its easier to put the new ones in

I might just skip it and start pulling stuff off the rear so that goes faster
#10
Sorry boys but I will not be making it tonight. I you really need me for anything call and I will be there in twenty min.

so I decided the gear install takes too many specialty parts to get done

We put everything back on, and today when I was putting on the tires, well theres a new problem.

The passenger tire spins freely in the air, the drivers tire does not turn. It acts like I have a locker, but of course, I dont have one

I spent a few hours on it today, hoping to get it fixed so I could drive into work, still have no idea whats wrong, had to borrow my Dad's truck to get into work, only 2 hours late

I think you're right about us not compressing the brake caliper on that side when we put it on.

Tell me if pulling it and C-clamping it down works.
No need to bleed if you watch it.
#13
Took the tire and the caliper off today, still wont turn

only thing left to try is taking off the front driveshaft and see if that has anything to do with it, not sure why it would

any ideas?

Magic fingers Michael says you're welcome again.

now what do you think about 35's on a 3.5" lift? I wonder how much my fenders would rub
#16
Many do it adding a 1" BL. But where would your tires go?
#17
Just was reading a thread about it on jeepsunlimited. Might be something I try in the future. I still want to get that clayton longarm kit and get that hooked up. But I need to concentrate on 1 thing at a time :?

I think that would look good. I like keeping the jeep as low as I can with the big meats
