I was reading online (since its on the web it must be true) that because my 500 has the A it was produced for Big 5 sporting goods and some of the parts for my gun are not the same as other 500's and it makes it a little harder to upgrade.
Anyone know if there is truth to this? Am I better off just keeping my 500 as a home/fun gun and picking up something else to mod?

if youre looking for a hunting shotgun on the cheap check out the Benneli SuperNova, its what I have
Synthetic forends on new Mossburg 500A cannot be replaced because action bars are attached to the forend.
Is that the main problem?

Was looking at doing a heat shield and sights and just a few other small things. Im fine with the way it is I just wanted to see if It was a pain to make it better. I also have the 870 I can use so Im set for hunting on that end.

my 500A has the 18" barrel & heat shield, I did the day glow sight from Sportsman and #3 just died (they dont hold up well) may look at another option, I also got a pistil grip & fold down stock at a gun show many years ago, makes it look mean folded up, and its nice to pull the stock down for stability.
I have thought about buying a longer barrel for it but may just opt to get another one and leave mine as the "door knocker"

"500" is the series/model of the Mossberg shotgun line. They have sub-calibers and are designated as such:
500A is 12 gauge
500B is 16 gauge
500C is 20 gauge
500E is .410 guage
The difference is "actually" between the Mossberg and the Mavericks. Mossberg makes the Maverick shotguns. They are the 'cheapie' line for Mossberg. They have either the single action bar or a dual action bar. Either way, the Mavericks have the arms pinned to the forend. So, you cannot install a Mossberg forend on it. You can install other accessories like the heat shield, pistol grip, tube extensions... just nothing that replaces the forend.
If you have a 500A, it's a 12ga. Go ahead and dress it up any way you want to. As long as it's a "made for Mossberg 12ga" accessory.
I also read that the newer 500A has the action bars pinned to the synthetic forend. I wonder if it's just the synthetic models? meaning that they sell a line called "Synthetic" for their hunting models. Maybe only those are pinned? If the trunion is there, you can always dremel/drill out the pins, I guess.
