So I had noticed on a few XJ’s I test drove that there is a “Part Time” and “Full Time” light on the dash when the transfer case is engaged. As soon as I shifted into 4H the part time light came on but I could never get the full time light to come on (even in 4L). What is the deal? Do only some XJ’s comes with the Full Time option? What is the difference between the two and should I be trying to purchase one over the other. This vehicle will be my daily driver but will also eventually see some intense off roading so I want to get the best performing “stock” items that I can. Whatcha guys think?

The lights are generic and come in all XJs. Most will only have part time and a np231 transfercase. Some had the full time option and a np242 transfercase. There is more aftermarket for the 231, but neither are bad. Both have full time 2 wheel drive so either will work for you.

Yup, mine would go into "full time" when in 4HI, but only read "part time" when in 4LO, but it was in 4LO the whole time and crawled great.
