My 04 TJ is an automatic and I was having some trouble getting it into gear. I wasnt having trouble with it shifting but pushing the button in on the shifter. So I took it to my local Jeep dealer to have my tranny looked at thinking that was the problem.
They called me a couple hours later and informed me that I needed a new shifter. For only $285 they could install a brand new one for me, $60 for the part and $225 labor (3 hours x $75 an hour). I told them to just get me the part and I would install it myself.
I picked up my vehicle and the part and headed over to Chris's house where Mike met up with me. We pulled the plastic casing around the shifter off, removed 3 screws and pulled the old shifter out. Put the new shifter on, put the screws back on and snapped the plastic casing back on. It took us about 15 min from start to finish, and saved myself $225.
After removing the old shifter I examined it to see what the problem was. The piece that Mike is holding is the plastic piece that travels down the shaft of the shifter. When you push the button in to shift gears this plastic piece pushes down releasing the shifter allowing you to move it. If Jeep would just sell this one plastic piece ( cost about $1 ) then there would have been no reason for me to get a new shifter, and total cost on fixing the problem would have been $1.
I have had this problem more then once with Jeep. There is a whole story behind the time when I tweaked my transfercase skid, and was hearing a really loud popping noise under my driver side floorboard.
Mike why dont you go ahead and tell them all about it.
