horseshoe lake jeeps recovery 12/4-5/10
#1
what an interesting jeep recovery we had.

i had just got home and found a message to call john and scott asap. they informed me they were stuck to the frame in mud, broken 10000lb winch cable, limited amount of battery life on cell. they were hoping my jeep was up, which it is not:(, and that i could help. i got on the horn and finally got paul in between services with alan. we discussed and thought with pauls jeep and the two of us we should be able to get them out.

left around 8pm and after punching in gps coordinates, texting, and cb contacts we made it out to them. paul has the pictures but what we found was johns jeep sunk deep passenger side about a 45 degree angle. scott was buried to the frame steering and difs all buried in the mud.

paul and i went to work figuring out how we were going to pull them out. we tried front, back, side angles. we were able to move them maybe a foot or so and that was it. it finally got to the point we had to put out a call to alan to get a little more muscle since he knew we were out and he was waiting on our progress. new problem we had cell reception, just barely but we were all almost out of battery life, i did not have a chance to charge me and the other with a signal was used up earlier calling for help.

thank go for ham radios!!! you go paul. paul got alan and we went out to meet him at mile marker 7 to guide him in. getting to be around 1 am now getting cold and paul and i are worn out since we both had been up since 4 am. on the way in alan is on the cb he just broke so paul backs up and we find alans front tire are both turned in and he is pointing to the hills. the nut holding the steering together fell off and the steering fell apart. paul and i flash light in hands start to back track to see if we can find the nut. paul said a little prayer and he found it down the road a bit. quick repair we are back to the stuck jeeps who have now sunk down another foot.

johns jeep was are fist to try and pull out. with alan pulling a tow rope strapped to johns roll bar to pull sideways and paul pulling john out backwards we began the dance to get him out. i had alan pull him sideways first to get him level some and then paul pulling a little bit at a time to back him out. after about 5 or 6 adjustments john is freed from the clutches of his mud. one down one to go.

scotts proved to be the hardest to get out. first we tried alan with his winch and paul on a tow rope to pull him out backwards. nothing at all, i could hear alan cable start to sing and stopped there. we then tried to pull him forwards and again the cable sung.

as we were going to try pulling from the back of scotts jeep again a stump out of no where jumped up and tried to smash my knee and cut my arm.

bleeding and limping we then went to the back and figured out some vectors and angles to pull and also brought in johns jeep, yes three jeeps to pull out one, we started to make him move a little bit but he still did not want to come out. i then had john and alan keep tension on their ropes and had paul back up two feet to do a bump pull and that was all we needed scott was freed.

lost to the mud gods was a hi-lift scraficed in about three feet of mud. nobody wanted to try and recover that so we will leave to be found someday in the future to show how technically challenged we are.

after cleaning up and loading everybody up we proceeded out to the main road. heading out scott calls and said he had lost his brakes pedal to the floor. stop look for leaks founf none and checked fluids good still. air in brake line?? maybe pressure came back up and we are off again. hit the main road and scott lost brakes again. we get out and look around rear pad is snapped and other half ready to come out. sorry scott you can fix that in morning we are too tired and nothing open to get parts. they go back to their camp paul, alan and i head home.

we make one more stop to make sure we are road worthy again when pauls jeep is making a funny sound under the hood. pop the hood and one of his fans had lost a bolt and was leaning against the power steering pulley. we disconnect the wire and pull it out and we are off agian trying to get home.

going through carefree out of no where alan gets lit up by the police. pulled over for no light on the plate. after ten minutes we are off and going again to finally get home. all of us are home about 330am.

alan and paul get a couple hours of sleep and they are back to ccv for their duties to the lord and i the sacrifical lamp has to sleep in until 10 am when i am rudely awoken by my dog because she is po i was with a couple other dogs last night.

that is it in a nut shell and paul can the pics later.

on observation i did make last night is that i like tow ropes over a winch to pull out stuck jeeps in mud. the winch just does not have the bounce that the ropes have and when that cable sings it can get kind of nerve racking.

LOL that story made me laugh... worst luck ever for all of you. hahaha I"m glad ya'll got out safe though! Pretty amusing story to read though.

Man I tell ya... got home around 4am, then due to all the dust my throat was dry and started an uncontrollable coughing :( finally after a bottle of water I was out, only to wake up what felt like 5min later to shower & head back to CCV. Alan did beat me there this morning, but in my defense I have to drive thru SunCity to get to Church!

i did hear from Scott around 2pm, there off to get a new rotor to fix & return home, but its a temp fix and he'll be on blocks for a while!

Again a HUG thanks to Russ & Alan for helping out!! Funny though Russ & I saw a huge skunk when going to meet up with Alan... I was quick to slow down and wait for him to cross the road! but was also a fun night, 12 water crossings for me :D and some off roading, Oh I also hate washboard roads! (incase I didnt mention that) some mud and answers to prayers :)
Carnage:
brake rotor
tranny mount / winch cable
steering / tail light
elect fan & set screw for my 2m/70cm antenna
and Russ... even though Red wasn't there, Russ took the carnage for her,
tripping over a tree stump 2X cutting his arm & banging up his knee.

No problem John... & Scott...
We all do that at least once... some of us learn... some dont.
Zach & I helped CCV north of lake Pleasant in 2007, looked dry on top, but 6" lower was a different story

Wow! Brutal. Remindes me of getting stuck in mud holes on logging roads in Oregon, or nearly sliding off of the road. Glad to hear you all got back.

Yeah made for a long day-night still feeling the effects as I think a cold is settling in now :(
Wouldn't of been that bad I think if Alan & I weren't scheduled @ CCV, Cant speak for him, but I know I was whooped and glad to see my pillow again after the last service on Sunday. But will remember the offer to help!!! I'm still in awe of it taking 3 of us to pull out 1.

The "pop" sound my brother hear was this

Not sure how but I'm sure being in the mud for that long along with trying to get free for an extended period of time had something to do with it.
