Alan's skinny axle / get a frame upgrade plans
#1
hmmm... I just started thinking about this:

with the parts off my XJ. Motor and Tranny are a straight swap according to my research. I'm getting more info on the axles, but with locking hubs, I might be in luck.

hmmmm....

I renewed my NRA membership this month too!

I am worried about a seller named Joe, too. LOL

No, I've been toying with the idea of finding a YJ or TJ roller and researching if my XJ motor and driveline will work. I've been looking for a FRAME, as well as some substatial axles. If can find that, it's cheaper than putting upgraded axles under my XJ and it gets me out of a unibody. What i don't use or modify, I can sell to recoup my investment. I've got two weeks off over Christmas and need a Christmas project. I might even learn to weld and use the welder I bought from Sc00by 2 years ago. Who knows. Not a major priority at this point, but found the CL post and price interesting. I hope to get more details and pics soon. If it's a good deal, then it's a project for me. If it's a total beater that's going to cost me 5 times as much to get going, then no go. Interesting scenario for me, though. Next XJ steps are upgraded axles, tires, and a cage, so if I can find it with a frame... well, you know.

Love the idea alan.

I just want a four door Jk and donate my axles and tires on to one of those.

sounds like a good project. I assume you have an automatic, I don't think the AW4 every came in the YJ. They used the TF999. Should be easy enought to make it work though, I think Stu may even have a write-up from putting one in a TJ that may be helpful. The biggest concern would be the rear driveshaft length.

a list of AW4 swaps for TJs and YJs

I didn't read all of this, but it might be helpful.

Those are very helpful. The part that I think will be even easier is that it's a fully motor and tranny swap, so the drive shafts are the main concerns. The motor, computer, and tranny talk to each other now.

yep, should be able to skip a lot of the wiring stuff. I wonder if you can plug in your computer and use the existing harness (if it's still there).

did it mention what to do for the cross-member?

Why do that? If the its all being pulled out of the XJ then it would be best to keep it as one...

Yup. If the guy would call me back I would get more details, but my understanding is that it's the tub, frame, axles, et al from a 95 YJ, just minus motor and tranny. If it's a roller I could go a bit "flight of the phoenix309" on it and get the body/suspension work done and then drop my motor and tranny it it, done. (over simplificaiton, but you get the point). Air, electrical, cooling, etc... would all move as one unit into a new body.

bad ones cause death wobble

Everyone does realize this has not been run by my accountant (read that as wife), right? I'm in research mode before I make my proposal. LOL
