Flat-head problems.
#1
Alright, I need some advice/tips on what I"m doing wrong.. Got a 46 CJ-2A with a flat-head 4 cylinder in it. Original motor, was pulled and rebuilt and is now back in. I have spark, I have compression (90 lbs each cylinder) and I have fuel. Which leaves timing.. I"ll do my best to describe it, we have the timing gears correct based off the fact we have compression (right?) The only other thing is the distributor and that is set with the timing marks on the fly wheel to fire off cylinder 1. It turns over, it even back fired once yesterday. But now I"m completely out of ideas.. I don't get it! Thoughts? Ideas? If you need pictures I can post some or whatever you need.. just want to get her running..

I haven't worked with timing in a while. You using a gun?
#3
Yeah, we hooked a gun up to it and everything seems like it's perfect. Completely baffled

I'm probably an idiot giving out wrong advise but, just lining up the fly wheel can leave you 180 out of phase can't it?
I remember reading about that when I was doing my engine but can't remember all of the specifics.

Per the boys in NM

Funny story. When my engine was built and ready to go back in, it back fired only once. Check for fuel, spark, the basics. After that, if you're getting compression on the engine in the number 1 cylinder, can feel it by placing yer thumb over the hole and cranking it over, then the cam and crank gears are properly aligned. The oil pump may be misaligned against the cam, that I don't recall how to stab off the top of my head as I don't have my FSM next to me. Bring the engine to No. 1 TDC, pull the distributor out. Look down the hole with a flashlight, you'll see the distributor is driven by the oil pump and can go in only 2 ways. With Number 1 at TDC, rotate the distributor rotor so that it points at the 5 o'clock position. Stab the distributor, rocking it gently until the shaft is all the way in. Tighten the clamp. Your firing order is 1-3-4-2 CCW. 5'oclock is Number 1. Run the wires accordingly. Gap the plugs to .030-.035. Begin starting the engine, slightly adjusting the distributor as you go until it runs. Hook a timing light to the number 1 plug wire, and check your timing. 6* advance at idle is where I ran mine at this altitude. Make sure the carburator is adjusted. Add some tension to the idle screw if needed for a fast idle until it runs. Run the air/fuel needle in about half way.

On that, Pertronix really made my L4 134 fire like a mother father.

Alright, still won't run.. I don't understand. I followed all the procedures everyone gave and none of them worked. I know my flywheel is 180 out, so I figure out the timing by when there is compression in cylinder 1 OR I just fire off cylinder 2. (i've tried both) So if I go with cylinder 1, with 1 at TDC I then put the rotor on, take note of where it is at, and put the cap on then proceed to put the wires on in firing order of 1-3-4-2 putting plug 1 where the rotor is pointing. And still I get nothing.... ideas?

Per NM boys :
Like I said over FBIM Bob, I had to put my wires on such as:
3421 with the number 3 plug wire on the number 1 plug spot.
The only other thing I can think of is the oil pump is not stabbed correctly.

I see you!

lol.. that be me.. I"ll have to play with it some more tomorrow I guess. I worked on it for almost 5 hours this afternoon/evening and got no where with it.
