FR42 update
#1
From Chris with the AZOHVC

Good morning everyone. Thought for a change that we would push to see if we can't get some positive re-enforcment out there.

Currently FR42 is being reviewed to be re-opened. The AZOHVC is working to prepare a grant that would allow for trail maintenance for FR42 and everything towards the lake. It is looking really good, but this is where everyone who loves FR42 can make a difference.

A letter of encouragement to The Tonto National Forest Service would help the process and might just help working out the kinks.

Please be sure to change the example, make it your own, add as much as you want to say, keep it POSITIVE and in regards to this trail/area.

Example:

Dear Tammy Pike,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your consideration in re-opening FR42 and the surrounding trails. This area offers myself and my family the ability to get out and enjoy what the Tonto National Forest has to offer for an outdoor experience and the opportunity as a family to enjoy quality time together.

We really appreciate your hard work in taking this and consideration for this area.

Thanks,
Your Name

that is funny i just inquired about it last week and got a reply wed i was getting ready to post it.

"If you're referring to Indian Bend Wash, it remains closed, with no immediate plans to open it. It is currently under review under the Travel Management Plan. If you need further information, you can contact our Cave Creek Ranger District at: 480-595-3300.

last time when i stopped out there and asked the ranger she said it was under review still and that jan it might open. i wonder if the budget is slowing down this review or what. she had said something about on a permit basis so we will have to see.

Dear Tammy Pike,

Thank you for the many updates on the status of FR42. We appreciate all that you and the Forest Service have done for this area. The 42 was definitely one of mine and my sister’s favorite trails, especially with its great fishing with Verde River access- We even tubed it from Horseshoe to Indian Bend, camping on the river as we went.
Thank you again for your work. We’re excited to hear the new plans.

The opening of this trail is underway. The wildlife bioligist has signed off on the azohvc proposal. If opening a trail was a 5 step process, well you could say we are on step three. This trail will be like bulldog canyon, gate with a combination.

I would like to thank everyone who has written a letter on fr 42. They are having a positive impact. Anyone who hasnt written a letter yet, it would be greatly appreciated if you could get one in tonight. The AZOHVC has a meeting with tonto tomorrow morning and the more letters the better. Thanks again!

Good info. I'm curious to find out what sort of condition the trail is in. No doubt you'll post up what you find.

According to Tammy Pike this trail is not open.

The process to re-open is an evaluation, that evaluation is going to take the Forest Service actually running the trail. I am hoping to get the exact date as we have some volunteers that are going to act as taxi's for the Forest Service and run this trail with them for the evaluation.

From that point Jeff will take the information obtained, write up the grant for the funding to make the necessary mitigations. Then the Forest Service has to review it, and approve it.

Once approved a schedule will be made and the work can begin. It is only after that work is complete that it will be open.

I have heard on some other sites that some think or have been told it is open. One post states someone at the FS said it was. Problem is saying so and so at the office said it was open, won't get you out of the ticket. Illegally being on this trail will get it closed forever. I know everyone is excited about it possible re-opening, I know I am, but we can't jeopardize losing it forever by jumping the gun. Please do not run this trail yet, it is not open. There are many ways a misunderstanding could happen, please don't play into it.

This trail is not open, thank you for your patience and waiting with us until it becomes a reality.

Ok, for those that can, I apologize for the short notice. We are in need of letters to support the grant that will fund maintenance on FR42. These letters can be individual or from your Jeep club.

Deadline is I need them tonight, sorry.

Please put them a club letter head if you have it, if not make it a personal letter.

My1stJeep@excite.com

Sample information you can include:

Tonto National Forest CC district. This is heavy maintenance of routes on the north side of Bartlett Dam Road that have not been open in over 5 years. This will allow these repaired routes to reopen in a BULL DOG CANYON fashion....ie a combo will be give at ranger station to access the trails gates.
This will include the very popular trail 42 the 4x4 clubs have missed for so long.
"our club enjoys the routes on the north side of Bartlett Dam road and have missed the runs on these routes since they closed in 2005 due to the fire damage, we would very much appreciate these routes being open again to the public"We support the work recommended in this project.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for those that see this in time and can help.
