Building a Cage
#1
OK. I think my next major undertaking (besides beefing up the steering), will be making a cage for the XJ.

I've debated internal vs exo and I'm going with internal.

Questions:

Best materials (and where to get it)

Estimated costs?

Time frame (I'm slow and new to welding, so once I get all the materials, is this a weekend project, or a several weekends project)

References (besides Geoff's rig, I like "themud'"s cage and "baronvonroots"'s cage... but are there any others I need to contact for pictures to get ideas?)

Thanks in advance, all.

You may want to talk to DaveO on the VJC. He has built more than a few cages for xj guys.

Yur kiddin right?

You are going to want to go with a minimum of HREW tubing. Pipe has it's place with bumper or sliders and the like, but I would never use it for a cage. Since yours is going to be internal and won't be scraping rocks then HREW should work just fine however if you want to go straight to rock and roll then just use DOM and be done with it.

Alan, you start puttin a cage in it and be prepared for it to look like Ricks.

I can get you a couple sticks of 3/4 pvc. It flexes real easy and then you don't have to worry about all those bends and stuff

1.75" .120 wall dom is what i would recommend. hrew will work since its inside but if you want to be very safe in knowing that youve put money where it should be put i would do dom. my whole buggy was hrew. lasted 2yrs and a few good flops on its side. if you want to get some tube let me know i have accts at a few places and get great prices. also design is as important if not more important than the material. a well designed cage will take a lot of abuse before its yields to the point where you have to fix/replace it.

if you are new to welding i would suggest getting someone who is experienced is welding to do that at least. your life might depend on it.

for tube your looking at around 80 bucks for a 24' piece of 1.75 dom hrew is probly around 50ish.

time frame would be how good whoever is running the bender and notcher can work and fit the tube together. it would probly take me a few days since i would take my time and make sure everything is well fitted and straight.

just my $.02
