options for replacing / upgrading the 4.0

Not planning on anything soon but Id like to get an idea of whats out there so I can form an opinion

What options are out there for beefing up or replacing the 4.0? Id like to improve gas mileage and gain power at the same time. Any ideas?

Id imagine Id need some sort of transmission adapter for that?

I thought if my engine ever blows up, I'd like to install a V6 diesel.

rebuild the 4.0 and stroke it to 4.5 or 4.7l. i have a buddy in canada that has this build and he loves it. you could go find a 302 with c6 tranny and drop that in. 302s are cheap to build and power for size they are great. i bought a running 302/c6 combo for 200 bucks a few months back. figure a couple hundred in new gaskets and cleaning it up and wala, i good little motor for cheap. by the way im swapping this motor into the scout that i drive this winter. what yr is your rig?

The only problem that you are going to have with a 302 combo is that you wouldn't be able to pass emmissions. Eng needs to be the same year or newer. To get a newer 302 with all the smog is going to be more than a 350 swap. Im a Ford guy and love the 302 but its not a good swap for something as new as yours.

thats why i was asking what yr. thats the biggest problem with swapping motors is the emissions crap. i think stroking the motor would be great for you. great low end torque and more cubes.

Just FYI. Mac who runs rubicon owners forum makes an intake. There are a gazillion threads on how great the power and mpg increase is. The common is 35's with 5.13's can get around 18-19. He cannot post pics, nor can you if purchased due to still waiting on a patend. It draws air in from the cowl. My buddy just put his on and said he noticed an immediate difference. He's too busy playing to get a mpg. But he said air comes through a scoop on the cowl into a factory filter, then has a secondary filter. Looks neat, and works great from all the threads ive seen. Look it up on macs 4x4. its called the MCAI.

did a little reading today GM Gen. III V8 (aluminum block), 407 lbs compared to the stock 4.0 at 515lbs

LS1 GM engine coming in around 305hp. Stock 4.0 someplace around 190

pretty big difference
