Shoot or no shoot
#1
Was just talking with the cleaner who got robbed at gunpoint a couple days ago. He's a veteran and usually has his gun with him but left it in the car that day. He was able to see the bullets inside the gun when it was pointed at his face. He said he knows that if he had had it on him she would've been on a slab. He had plenty of time to react, even that she trouble getting the gun out of her pocket after she already announced she had one.

I'm well aware he was in in his right to fire. As much as he hates a theif, he's kind of glad he didn't have his gun on him. I know it's definitely them putting themselves in the position of their lives over a few dollars ($155 in his case). And you don't know at the time how far they're willing to go.

So after all is said in done, would you shoot without the knowledge of what their full intentions are but with the knowledge you will most likely get sued by the family of the theif even while innocent and that you took a life?

Curious. Discuss.

if they point a gun at me the only assumption you can make is they intend to use it

so

shoot

That's all you have on it?
The real reason she's not dead was that he didn't have the gun on him.
I understand that the correct scenario would be to win the draw if both parties were armed and it's what I would set out to do if it happened here when I was armed.

The store owner should still have his $155 and the lady should be laying in the morgue right now. Legally, he was justified to shoot.

If your life or the life of your family is threatened, you are justified to stop that threat.

Here's an interesting story I read yesterday. Oklahoma Pharmacist Who Shot Man Robbing Store Charged With Murder The store was being robbed and the pharmacist shot the robber once in the head. Done. Clean shoot. The problem is, he continued to shoot the robber 5 more times while he was laying on the floor. The threat was already stopped, but he failed to cease fire. My personal opinion on this is he shot the guy in the head on the first shot. Robber is unconscious on the floor at this point and most likely dead. How can you charge the pharmacist with 1st degree murder for shooting a dead body 5 more times?

My point kind of is that your cleaners could get robbed 9 more times and each of the 10 robberies will be completely different. That's the tricky part of carrying a firearm as self defense. You have to continually prepare yourself for millions of different scenarios and know what you legally can and can't do.

Good answer.
Someone told me about that Pharmacist story the other day.
Don't think that would happen here. Here and Texas, Fear for your life means extra bullets means fear for your life.

Part of why I don't have a gun is because of this question (and I'm P-whipped, but that's a different discussion...).

When I was closing a pizza place and taking deposits at night, I asked for my Dad's 9mm for protection. He said he would let me use it, but asked me if I was ready to kill a man. He was pretty clear that when you bring out a gun, it escalates the entire situation, so decide ahead of time how you would react.

Within the limits of protecting family, I would do anything. Anything.

For a business, in a robery situation, etc... I would not. I have insurance for that. I would not kill a man to protect my business, so I never carried a gun professionally. I feel safe an confident in my home, our neighborhood, and our location so I don't feel the need for one at home.

My 2 cents.

I love guns. Love to hunt and shoot. This response is in regards to the question shoot or don't shoot.

Me personally..... I would shoot. I don't care what the situation and how much money it is. If my person or my family are in physical harm, I'm going to do whatever is humanly possible to stop that. If that means putting a gun to a persons face and pulling the trigger then so be it.

The princple of the money comes into play also. Would anyone think differently if it was a million dollars he had instead of 155?

Life is life.

I have had to look at this a few ways.
1. What I say I will do... Shoot to kill
2. What would happen.... Point gun and go crazy but never shoot.
3. Taking a life. What next? Am I going to be ok with it? As a Christian I know where I would end up if I am killed. What about the other person?
4. Will the next person who has a gun in their face be shot by this person?

Its a bunch of stuff to think about.

In the end I would take a persons life if it came to it. I would do everything in my power to prevent that but would kill someone if I needed too.

All good points from everyone.

It'd be nice to think about Bob's last point on #3. Sucks that that would probably be a question later, but even though you'd want the answer it would change nothing on what they decided to do.

I hadn't thought of #4 but you're right. Just because you comply and hand them $155 with out incident, it doesn't mean the story ends there. They got away with it and it only amps up their almost guaranteed next attempt.

I think the biggest thing is that the cleaner's is a family business like mine. His wife is right there by his side. For me, my mother's here sometimes (usually with her own gun ).

Almost all robberies cost more than the criminal will ever know. Last break in here they got only a fistfull of change but broke a $600 window and two $500 register drawers. The cleaner had someone steal $30 worth of copper from his AC units but it cost $14,000 to repair. Next time it happens in this complex I have a feeling the thief will never get a chance to find out how much it actually cost either.

So would you advertise on the window (like an alarm sticker) that the premises are protected by a weapon and hope to detur or would you rather have the element of surprise?

honestly though id rather not let the other people know I was carrying, but thats just my choice

also you really have to be sure of your backdrop at your place, big glass windows in the front of your store. Where will your round end up if you miss?

I think you need to put a sign in the window that says 24 hour video surveillance

I've thought about that too. But mostly because that's expensive glass

Wrong!!! A sign like this is what you need to keep your store crime free.

Chuck Norris' photo scares away criminals
Businesses reach out to Hollywood tough guy for help in tough times
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In today's turbulent, recession-plagued world filled with crime and despair for many businesses, can one man provide hope?

It's possible, if that man is Chuck Norris.

The legendary Hollywood action hero is now apparently a crime fighter in Europe โ€“ or at least a menacing image of Norris is.

A bakery in Split, Croatia, has employed a poster of the TV star and martial arts champion after it suffered a string of burglaries.

According to European news accounts, the bakery had been broken into nearly every week until owners put up a photo along with the message: "This shop is under the protection of Chuck Norris."

The bakery has reportedly been crime-free for more than a month since Norris has been on duty.

Norris says he's thrilled he can be of service, telling WND, "I am very honored to help reduce crime anywhere on the planet, even from a photo!"

"To be honest we just started it as a joke but it really has worked," sales assistant Mirna Kovac said, according to Britain's Ananova. "Thieves haven't been anywhere near us for ages. People seem to respect him.

"Everyone around here has seen his films and he's quite a popular character, perhaps even among criminals, so they've decided to leave us alone."

She added: "We have had a few customers come in and ask us whether they can get Chuck's autograph. They really believe he is sitting in our storeroom out the back ready to pounce on any burglars."

Hmm the Muslim kids at the Pizza shop next door are packing two pistols and an AK. That would make some headlines.
