Old WWII pics of my Grandpa
#1
Found these at my parents house. Im in the process of scanning them and then cleaning them up a little right now. I have about a thousand to go through. Once Im done Ill put everything up on a website along with a bio and pages from his diary. Pretty neat learning about his life and the things he experienced

Heres a few that Ive done so far

We still have this jacket and the gun he is wearing in this picture. Interesting thing about the gun is the notches in the grip. He was shot down over Africa and had to fight his way out

This would be his normal spot on the bomber

Very Cool.
My mother just gave me a bunch of my grandpa's war photos too. A bunch from France. Couple with Jeeps. Apparently he like them so much he bought one as soon as he got back :cool)

That's awesome Chris. It's nice that your family has those old pictures and cool to learn about your grandpa, too. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe I'll play with the edges later.
Here's Chris's G-pa's Service Pistol, bible, and tags

Guess I should technically add some blur to it, but I'd rather it readable

These are really cool pictures! The one where he's standing by the bomber, his hand is bandaged. Also, the picture of him at the machine gun, it was taken in the air. If you zoom in on the bottom left corner you can look through the nose of the bomber and see clouds. Wow! The picture Mike did (Gun, dog tags and Bible) is now my desktop. -Tom

hah the above post was from my Dad, he was logged into the forums under my account

Thanks again Michael for doing those pictures, they turned out great!

Heres some more info my Dad found out about my Grandpas service and the awards he won.

A short summary;

Dad wasn't a bombadier. That was a real surprise to me. He was the "bomb sight technician". A patch on his sleeve, his wings and one of his medals indicates that he was part of the "air crew". I didn't find anything about him being a Bombadier. However, he does talk about flying on missions in his diary. I'm guessing his main job was the bomb sight tech. but when they needed someone to fill in, for whatever reason, he went.

He was part of the 343rd Heavy Bomber Squadron, 98th Group. They were called the "Force for Freedom" on their patch. They were also called the "Pyramidiers". Probably because they were located so close to the great pyramids of Egypt. That's why he was able to climb them and take the various pictures.

Dad won the Bronze Star which is a combat award for bravery. I have no idea what he did to win this. Although, I found out that the Bronze Star was not awarded for action in flight. So it had to have something to do with combat on the ground. Maybe it has something to do with the 3 German graves he's standing beside in one of the pictures.

Dad's group, the 98th, won at least 4 "Presidential Citations". These are awards given to the entire unit for combat. They are pretty big deals! The Internet said it was comparable to individuals winning the Distinguished Cross.

Remember the ribbon that has all the stars on it? The ribbon is for fighting in the African / Europe Theater. The 14 stars represent 14 campaigns that he was a part of. I'm not sure how big something had to be to be considered a campaign.
