Captain Napalm appears to have been a prototype for Stupendous Man, Calvin's later super-character transformation comic book type dealie. Evidently, when Watterson decided to develop the character further he judged that a renaming was needed. Associating napalm and the American way carries uncomfortable political connotations. The name also contains an unnecessary theme of wanton violence that Watterson clearly wanted to avoid and instead went with the more general "Stupendous" theme, which is of course a better play on Superman anyway.
