Captain Napalm appears to have been a prototype for Stupendous Man, Calvin's later super-character transformation comic book type dealie. Evidently, when Watterson decided to develop the character further he judged that a renaming was needed. Associating napalm and the American way carries uncomfortable political connotations. The name also contains an unnecessary theme of wanton violence that Watterson clearly wanted to avoid and instead went with the more general "Stupendous" theme, which is of course a better play on Superman anyway.

I want to say it was how the box was turned. Transmogrifier was up side down and when you pushed the button it went zap or boink... The time machine was right side up and they went to the past when they were trying to go to the future. Was the duplicator on its side or something...
