The Hollywood Reporter

Elizabeth Berkley and Briana Evigan have boarded S. Darko (aka Samantha D), the sequel to Donnie Darko being directed by Chris Fisher.

Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) and Justin Chatwin (The Chumscrubber) also are in the movie, which stars Daveigh Chase, reprising her role from the original cult classic.

The story, set seven years after the first film, follows Donnie Darko's sister, Samantha, who, in dealing with her broken family, flees town with her best friend (Evigan) when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Production has begun in Utah.

As long as they don't jack the original up, very cool
#3
Somehow I don't think they can measure up to the first one.....
#4
Yeah, the first one was more of a cult classic where the DVD outgrossed the theater. They probably will go for a more explainable plot to push the public theater sales.

That's so wrong... by definition, something is a cult classic because a group of people (outside the mainstream masses) decided something was good based on their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of other like minded people... it usually happens by accident and has as much to do with the peopel you experienced it with (or can share that experience with) than the movie itself. I hate it when they try to "re- create" such unexpected connection by commercializing, or "over stylizing" something that is a cult classic. Just doesn't work and is very disapointing...

Sequals are never as good as the original. In this case they are going to have to come up with a whole new idea. They can not make a move like that with the same structure. It will have to be completly different with only references to the original.

I looked up "sequels better than original" and got a few including:

Aliens
Godfather II
Superman II
The Empire Strikes Back
Toy Story II
T2
And of course Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends

Did I miss any?

Ok, so that is 7 out of how many??? In a movie like this I just dont see it happening. I cant really see it as a sequel rather than a movie with flashbacks or referencing it.

you know... now that you mention it, "My Little Pony II: Escape to Bubble Mountain" was actually better than the original, even if it did get released straight to video.

Thanks for helping us remember sequals that were better than the original.

(allthough I do have to agree with Empire Strikes Back...)

I would have to second that. X-Men 2 I can agree with, but Temple of Doom blew...

I disagree on National Treasure. The first one was better.
