Water Pump Feedback?
#1
Anything special I need to know about water pumps? I need to pick one up and install it this weekend and just wanted to check and see if there was anything I particularly "needed" or anything I particularly needed to "stay away from".

I haven't heard of a water pump making much of a difference and I haven't heard of needing something special, but it never hurts to check, right? :)=)

Water pump is a water pump. Unless you get the high flow supper delux...

Since you have to rip all that crap off the front of the eng... do the belts and junk.

Thanks, Bob.

I don't need the super duper high flow mega gonzo version, but thanks for the belts and hoses tip. I was redoing the hoses, but didn't think about the belt.

its a pretty easy job, should take under 2 hours if you go slow

I had to do mine not too long ago and didnt run into any problems

I replaced my water pump about a year ago. Splurged and got the FlowKooler. Now my engine never gets hot.... warms up.... Anyway, if anyone is interested I'd be glad to fill you in on all my FlowKooler experiences, but otherwise I'm not gonna get into right now. It's not the point.

What I did want to point out is that I highly recommend you replace your fan clutch at the same time. From what I have heard, bad fan clutches are the #1 killer of water pumps. Once the clutch starts to give out it can allow excessive wobble in the fan, witch in turn puts additional stress on the water pump shaft bearings/seals. And a new cluth will only run you about $40 (I think). I've only changed out 2 pumps in my life and both of them had bad fan clutches that I had to replace. So, it's at least worth giving it serious consideration, especially if your old pump is leaking from the shaft seal or weep hole.

But at the same time, when ever I really start to feel I know what I'm talking about. Thats when my Jeep proves me wrong.

awesome. That's the type stuff I was looking for! LOL

Paul suggested I replace the fan clutch last fall when I was having some running hot issues (imagine that... an XJ running hot. strange, I know) but flushing the cooling system and changing the thermostat seemed to help.

I'll do the waterpump (standard water pump, still don't think I need the "big daddy"), upper hose (just replaced lower a month ago), belt, AND fan clutch...

Paul, I know you're out of town Sunday... you are a lucky, lucky man. :)=) :)=) :)=)

Thanks for the feedback, all.

Yeah Fan clutch wasent too bad to do, just in a tight spot, but I managed to do the water pump - fan clutch - T-stat all with in 2hrs :)g)

Done.

Water pump, fan clutch, upper hose (did lower hose last month), and new belt.

Took me three, but I had a little helper. :)=) I think Ivan is going to replace the water pump and fan clutch on his bike later today. :P

yeah! it's dry underneath, I don't HAVE to turn on the electric fan to keep it at 160... and no blood! Life is good.

Thanks, all.

Right on. It's always a good feeling to know that there's a few more things you shouldn't have to worry about breaking for quite some time!

Hey Alan,
Keep the old belt & stuff it under your back seat, this way you'll have a spare :)g)
