    Default back country protection

What do you carry for protection while out hiking and back packing?

I always carry my little 9mm with me but I have no expectations of it stopping a bear or elk. I don't think the 9 would have enough velocity to penetrate far enough to hit any vital organs

I know the chances of running into a bear are slim, but its already happened to at least one of us

Ive looked at the glock 20, taurus tracker .44 mag and the ruger alaskan

What would be your choice? My criteria is cheap, light and durable

Im not sure your criteria works. Most of the guns you want to use to stop a bear will not be cheap if its good and not durable if its cheap.

You'll just tickle a bear with hollow points and not in the good way. They'll just slow down and separate.

glock 20 in 10mm or those .44mag revolvers I mentioned

hollow point are the worst. They are designed to break apart, youre just gonna cause a shallow wound that makes them mad. You want the round to stay together so it penetrates far enough to hit a vital organ.
